Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) is an umbrella term for a variety of disorders that result in a breakdown in the hearing process. In short, our brain cannot make sense of what the ears hear because the auditory signal is distorted in some way.
One of the biggest problems experienced by children with CAPD is being able to clearly distinguish speech in noise. This is commonly reflected in the classroom, where children aren't able to understand their teacher. If a child has difficulty focusing on what their teacher is saying, it becomes much harder to learn or remember new information.
Australian Hearing is offering a service at select centres for the diagnosis and treatment of certain forms of CAPD.
What does the service involve?
The service is currently available for children aged six and above who do not have a hearing loss and:
The program is based on recommendations from our research division, the National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL), and tests for conditions for which a definite diagnosis can be made and appropriate remediation exists. This includes NAL's test and remediation tool developed for a type of CAPD known as Spatial Processing Disorder (SPD). NAL's Listening in Spatialized Noise - Sentences test (LiSN-S) and LiSN & Learn auditory training software are proven to successfully identify and treat children with SPD.
