In memory of Dr Bruce Shepherd AM - founder of The Shepherd Centre
25 May, 2018
It’s with great sadness that we share the news that Dr Shepherd has passed away.
Our hearts go out to Dr Shepherd’s family and to all our friends at The Shepherd Centre. We are proud partners of this truly inspirational organisation that has transformed the lives of over 2,000 children with hearing loss.
With two profoundly deaf children, Dr Shepherd and his late wife Annette were determined to find an alternative method to the limited options in Australia at the time to help deaf children interact with the hearing world. Due to their leadership and true pioneering spirit, they established The Shepherd Centre in NSW to help deaf children learn to listen and speak as well as develop their social skills.
Dr Shepherd was also the driving force behind lobbying the government to introduce NSW State-wide Infant Screening Hearing (SWISH) program - which is now used nationally.
His extraordinary work has helped position Australia as one of the best places in the world to be born deaf with The Shepherd Centre’s outcomes for children with hearing loss incomparable.
A public memorial service will be held to commemorate the life of Dr Shepherd. Details will be made available on The Shepherd Centre’s website shepherdcentre.org.au
