How to apply for a Voucher for Hearing Services

Australian Hearing provides a full range of subsidised hearing services to eligible adults. These services range from hearing checks to fitting hearing aids and counselling about hearing loss. Most eligible adults (including pensioners and veterans) will need a Voucher from the Office of Hearing Services (OHS) for hearing services to become a client of Australian Hearing.

What to do if you think you have hearing loss

Hearing loss is more common than you might think; it affects one in six Australians and 60 per cent of people over the age of 60.

It is a part of the natural ageing process and because it generally occurs gradually, many people don’t realise their hearing is declining. It’s often family or friends who notice the problem first.

Warning signs of hearing loss include:

  • Do you have trouble hearing people unless they are facing you?
  • Do others complain your TV is too loud?
  • You think people mumble.
  • Do you have trouble hearing the phone ring?
  • Do you find it difficult to follow conversations in noisy places?

If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the above, then a quick and easy hearing check is the first step. You can call your local Australian Hearing centre on 131 797 to arrange a free hearing check at any of our 460 centres located across the country.

If further assessment is required

You may be recommended to have a full hearing assessment with an audiologist after your initial hearing check. This assessment lets us accurately measure your hearing and find the best strategy to help.

If you are eligible for the Australian Government Hearing Services Program, this assessment is also free of charge.

The Hearing Services Program gives you access to hearing services and devices to assist with hearing loss.

Seeing your doctor

Before your assessment appointment with us, you’ll need to visit your doctor to have a Medical Certificate form signed.

Once your doctor has signed the Medical Certificate form, you’ll need to contact Australian Hearing to book your appointment. You will need to provide Australian Hearing with your signed Medical Certificate form.

What your Voucher entitles you to

Australian Hearing services are free, apart from a small annual fee for batteries and maintenance. Many high-quality hearing devices are also free, but you can choose to contribute towards the cost of higher-technology devices with more features.

Call us on 131 797 to find out if you are eligible for a Voucher.
