Why we recommend you get your hearing checked
Good hearing helps us stay connected to the people and life we love, yet we often take our hearing for granted and forget to keep an eye on it. The truth is, because hearing changes slowly with age, it’s not always easy to spot the signs. We recommend you make your hearing health part of your annual health routine. Consider the following:
- Do you often ask people to repeat themselves during conversation?
- Is your TV or radio volume too loud for others in the room?
- Do you get physically or mentally exhausted from trying to listen hard to sounds all day?
- Do you find it hard to hear friends and family on the phone?
- Do you avoid social situations because you can’t keep up with the conversation, especially in noisy places like at a café?
If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, it’s a good idea to get your hearing checked in case you may have hearing loss.
Why treating hearing loss early matters
Just like caring for your heart or staying active, looking after your hearing is an important part of staying healthy—especially as you age. Addressing hearing loss early helps you stay connected to the people and activities you love, by supporting clearer communication, reducing misunderstandings, and helping preserve your independence and quality of life.
Around 3.6 million Australians experience some level of hearing loss.1 It’s especially common as we get older—affecting half of people aged 60–70, 70% aged 70–80, and 80% of people aged over 80,¹ yet many people wait an average of seven years before seeking help.² Taking action early means you’re choosing to stay engaged, confident, and connected. Whether it’s enjoying conversations with loved ones, participating in social activities, or continuing with activities you love—treating hearing loss early helps you hold onto the things that matter most.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 15 minute hearing check really free?
Yes. If you’re an adult aged 18 years and over, there’s no cost or obligation.
Will I need more hearing checks?
You’ll receive personalised advice based on your 15-minute free adult hearing check, which may include a recommendation for a comprehensive hearing assessment at one of our hearing centres. A comprehensive hearing assessment and other services may incur a fee if you’re not eligible for the Australian Government Hearing Services Program Voucher Scheme.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes of course. Having a friend or family member present can help with questions and support. Having a family member present is ideal because it allows you to have someone familiar to discuss your options with.
Is follow up care included?
If hearing loss is detected, we’ll recommend that you book an appointment for a comprehensive hearing assessment at one of our hearing centres. In that appointment, if we determine that you could benefit from hearing aids, we’ll tailor a hearing solution that best suits you based on your needs, lifestyle and budget. Depending on your eligibility, you may be able to receive fully subsidised hearing aids at $0* cost to you through the Australian Government Hearing Services Program Voucher Scheme.
What’s the difference between the free 15-minute adult hearing check and a comprehensive hearing assessment?
While a hearing check and a comprehensive hearing assessment both check your ears for hearing loss, they differ in a few ways.
Free 15-minute hearing check: This is a quick test of your hearing that gives a good indication that you may have hearing loss, but it’s not a full diagnosis.
Comprehensive hearing assessment: This is done at our hearing centres by one of our expert clinicians and can take around about 1 hour to complete. The assessment will confirm if you have hearing loss and can benefit from wearing hearing aids. In the assessment, our clinician will also discuss your lifestyle, your hearing needs and your budget. If a hearing aid is recommended, they’ll show a range of suitable devices for you based on your assessment. A comprehensive hearing assessment and other services may incur a fee if you’re not eligible for the Australian Government Hearing Services Program Voucher Scheme.
