Hearing Australia uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to improve our services and business operations. This statement explains how we use these tools safely, responsibly and transparently.
How Hearing Australia uses AI
Hearing Australia provides essential hearing services to over 260,000 children and adults each year and is committed to using technology and data to provide these clients with the best possible outcomes.
As a result, Hearing Australia is committed to using AI tools to improve our services while ensuring we meet in full our legal and ethical responsibilities to our clients, our people and the communities we serve.
Classification of AI Use
We use a range of AI tools to support decision making and workplace productivity.
This includes an AI tool which supports our clinicians to produce high quality client notes and documentation.
All clients are asked for their consent before we use the tool, and it is not used with clients who do not provide this consent. All client information is retained within Hearing Australia’s systems, to maintain the privacy and security of this information.
Our clinicians review, edit and approve all documentation generated by the tool. It is not used to make clinical decisions, provide diagnoses, or determine eligibility for services, with all clinical decision-making made by our clinicians.
We also use AI tools to support our business operations and improve our productivity and impact.
Policy requirements and safeguards
All staff are required to comply with Hearing Australia’s AI Governance Policy and operate in line with our legislative and policy requirements, including the Privacy Act 1988.
In particular, staff must critically examine and validate AI content and ensure that sensitive information is protected and remains within Hearing Australia’s systems.
Hearing Australia does not use AI tools for clinical decision-making and staff are encouraged to become familiar with the potential value and associated risks of using AI tools.
The use of AI is overseen by a committee chaired by Hearing Australia’s Chief Digital and Transformation Officer. This Committee is responsible for the approval of the development and use of AI systems by Hearing Australia and the ongoing monitoring of the use of AI.
